Kapadokya

Cappadocia is one of the most otherworldly landscapes on earth — a vast volcanic plateau in central Anatolia sculpted over millions of years into an extraordinary terrain of fairy chimneys, cone-shaped rock formations, deep valleys and cave-riddled cliffs. The region sits between the ancient cities of Kayseri (Caesarea) and Nevşehir, in the heart of Türkiye.

Human habitation here stretches back to the Hittite period (2nd millennium BC), but Cappadocia's most remarkable legacy is its early Christian heritage. Fleeing Roman persecution, early Christians carved an extraordinary network of underground cities — Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı are the most famous, descending up to 85 metres below ground with churches, stables, wineries and living quarters for thousands of people.

The Göreme Open-Air Museum, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a monastic complex of rock-cut churches, chapels and monasteries decorated with Byzantine frescoes dating from the 10th to 13th centuries — among the finest examples of Byzantine art in existence. The surrounding valleys — Rose Valley, Red Valley, Pigeon Valley, Ihlara Gorge — offer spectacular hiking through landscapes of surreal beauty.

Today Cappadocia is world-famous for its hot-air balloon flights at sunrise — drifting silently over the fairy chimneys and valleys in the golden morning light is an experience unlike any other on earth.
